Story/History of recipe

Mango dal is also called as Mamidikaya Pappu in Telugu. It is a popular dal in Andhra Pradesh. It can be prepared with raw mangoes. The raw mango gives a perfect twist to our regular dal recipes.

In Rayalaseema, people love this recipe. This dal can be prepared in different ways. In this, we have to use green chili or red chili powder. Now we can cook Raw mango dal with red chili powder.

    Ingredients

    • Half raw mango peeled and chopped into medium-sized

    • Toor dal cooked - 1 cup

    • Red chili powder - 2 tablespoons or adjust the quantity depending on your spicy

    • Turmeric powder- 1 teaspoon

    • Curry leaves - 10

    • Salt to taste

    • Ghee - 1 tablespoon

    • Urad dal - 1 teaspoon

    • Jeera - 1 teaspoon 

    • Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon

    • Hing - 1 teaspoon

    • Red chili flakes - 1 teaspoon

    • Garlic leaves -3 crushed

    • Water -as required

    Preparation Steps

    1. Firstly peel the skin of raw mango and cut into small pieces
    2. Take a large kadai, put the mango pieces along with a cup of water and add a little turmeric
    3. Cover with lid and cook till mangoes turn soft. Don’t overcook mangoes
    4. Now add red chili powder, little turmeric powder and salt to taste
    5. Mix well and make sure there are no lumps of chili powder
    6. Now add a cooked dal and give a good mix
    7. Add water if required to get thick consistency of dal and cook for 5 minutes
    8. Now take a small pan to add ghee when it turns hot add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal, Hing, chili flakes, crushed garlic and curry leaves and allow to split
    9. Turn off the flame and pour this tempering to mango dal
    10. Finally, garnish with some coriander leaves and serve hot with rice
    11. If u want to add onion and tomatoes I will become tastier .it is optional.
